Seven Moons is a complete set of eight piano improvisations by Mark Christopher Brandt which were lifted from the DVD of the same name. The interaction between camera man, engineer and pianist has been removed, leaving a smooth and peaceful recording of piano music that will leave the listener who has not seen the video to believe that these pieces were well thought out and practiced compositions. They are not.
Mark describes the process for this DVD/CD below:
I gave the engineer (Bill McElroy) a cup with 24 pieces of paper in it. On each piece was a tonal center with either major or minor specified. For example it might say C Major or C minor.
Bill picked each one - told me the key - titled it and said “rolling.” Then I began to play with only this input. I had no themes prepared and no lines or licks to deliver. Everything was spontaneous to the moment.
I instructed Bill to say “time” when I hit the 5 minute mark. As soon as I heard his voice in the headphones I immediately developed an ending and stopped playing. We then began the process again. I did this 8 times that day with the idea that I would return to the studio on two other occasions so that I might encounter all 24 tonal centers within 3 sessions. For this project the titles were placed after the recording was done. They fit, as the seven moons with the concept. There is nothing more involved in the titles of each piece.
This CD is the result of that first recording session. I do not believe that a human being is capable of this without being connected to God. I do believe however, that it can be done without knowing that God is the source of the music.
Either way, the creator is served whether we give Him the credit or not.
I choose to give God the glory. He is the Creator. I am the creature.
